The Ebro Delta

The Ebro Delta Natural Park is located at the mouth of the River Ebro, in the province of Tarragona, in the regions of Montsià and Baix Ebre. It was declared a protected natural space in 1983.

This space includes, in alphabetical order, the municipal terms of L’Ampolla, Amposta, Camarles, Deltebre, San Carlos de la Rápita and San Jaume d’Enveja.

The Ebro Delta is the largest wetland in Catalonia and one of the most important in Western Europe, behind the regional park of the Camargue in France and the Doñana National Park in southern Spain. The Ebro delta covers 320 km², of which 20% are natural protected areas, 75% of its surface is arable, and the rest is occupied by man, urban, with a population of over 60,000 people.

The main economic activity of the territory is agriculture with irrigated crops, fruit trees, and rice. Fisheries and aquaculture play a very important role. Finally tourism is also considered an essential economic engine for the territory.

The Ebro River, the largest river in the Iberian Peninsula, is the main responsible for the creation of the Ebro Delta. For thousands of years it has contributed the sediments that have formed the territory, depositing them here, and ghuanyant this space to the sea.

This sediment has designed an extensive plain of more than 320 km² of surface projected about 22 km into the sea. The present silhouette of the Delta is triangular with two hemispheres, one in the north and the other in the south, which delimit the bays of the Fangar and the Alfacs.

The climate of the Delta of the Ebro is Mediterranean: with moderate temperatures and high humidity, with precipitations rather scarce. The most characteristic phenomenon of this territory is the wind, which is often persistent and often intense.

This is our Delta, roughly, and has been named Biosphere Reserve. A fragile and precious ecosystem that deserves to be visited and respected.
